Thunder Launch Championship Defense with Dramatic Overtime Triumph
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander joined Oklahoma City back in 2019.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored the decisive baskets deep into double overtime as the Oklahoma City Thunder opened their NBA title defense with a 125-124 victory over the visiting Rockets.
The reigning MVP poured in 35 points, featuring two from the free-throw line with just 2.3 seconds remaining in double OT, giving the champions a winning beginning.
Houston's Alperun Sengun top-scored with a game-high 39 and also connected on a personal-best five three-pointers.
But the Thunder's rookie, who contributed 28 points, played a major role together with the game's hero.
"Determination and defence," Gilgeous-Alexander said of their showing. "We know that when we execute on defence we give ourselves a chance no matter what's going on—shots, misses, good luck or bad luck. We did enough defence to get the win. We're still shaking off rust, but it's a good start."
Before the tip-off, Oklahoma's championship banner was unveiled at their arena, while the players were awarded their title rings.
The Thunder defeated the Pacers in the previous season's championship series. It was their maiden championship since the franchise relocated in 2008 to Oklahoma City from Seattle, who had won the 1979 title.
Indiana will have the opportunity to get some early revenge on Friday when they host Oklahoma, while the Rockets return to action on the identical day at the Pistons.
Elsewhere, a huge effort of 43 points, 12 boards and nine dimes from Luka Doncic was insufficient to stop his new team the Los Angeles Lakers from suffering a 119-109 loss against the Golden State Warriors.
Miami's star picked up 31 points and Golden State's sharpshooter chipped in 23 for the visiting Warriors.
Los Angeles were missing the league's top scorer James as he is recovering from a back issue.
